"Gurs 1940" exhibition

Exhibition "Gurs 1940, expulsion and murder of the Jewish population of southwest Germany

The Wannsee Conference House in Berlin, Maison d'Izieu and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region have joined forces to mark the 80th anniversary of "Operation Bürckel" in 2020. Delayed due to the health crisis and inaugurated at the French Embassy in Berlin in April 2021, the exhibition can be seen at Maison d'Izieu until 28 August.

On 22 and 23 October 1940, more than 6,500 Jewish men, women and children from Baden, the Palatinate and Saarland in Germany were deported to the Gurs camp in southern France - in one of the first systematic deportations organised by the Nazis. Many of the deportees died in this and other camps in southern France. From the summer of 1942 onwards, those interned at Gurs were deported to extermination camps in Eastern Europe, where they were murdered. Few of them returned. This deportation of German Jews to France, unique in Nazi-occupied Europe, has gone down in history as "Operation Bürckel". 7 families of children welcomed at the Colonie d'Izieu were taken in this round-up.
