Exhibition: colours of carefreeness
Exhibition "les couleurs de l'insouciance, paroles et images des enfants de la maison d'Izieu dans les collections de la BNF
Drawings and little words were made at Izieu between May 1943 and April 6, 1944 to give a present to a friend, to send to a relative, for the pleasure of time spent telling a story with lines and colour during a day punctuated by walks, outdoor games, swimming or preparing for shows.
Cowboys, Indians, aeroplanes and elephants, a tiger hunt or a polar bear hunt, the imagination of the children of the Izieu colony was fed by literature, cinema, children's magazines, radio and the press, as it is for all children. The diversity of registers and inspirations, but also their banality, remind us of the carefree spirit, that precious feeling that is so typical of childhood.
Carriers of messages of hope, symbols of life that have become historical archives, the drawings and letters of the children of the House of Izieu are a gift to the present for each of us: they invite us to a moment of introspection to question our human condition and reaffirm the need to cherish life.
Preserved by the Bibliothèque nationale de France since 1993, the originals will return for the first time to the Maison d'Izieu for an exhibition in a new space: the Zlatin gallery.
The exhibition is organised by Maison d'Izieu in partnership with the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
Admission to the Zlatin Gallery is included in the memorial's entrance ticket.
