This magnificent château was built in 1316 by Pierre de Luyrieu, high on a rock overlooking the town of Culoz. The château has remained intact since its inception except for the towers which were restored after the revolution. (RESERVATION ESSENTIAL)
The château is constructed on the Montveran Rock, where Berold of Saxony defeated the Saracens in the year 1000. Completed in 1316 the château has not changed since it was first built. Since then it has hosted many illustrious people within its walls. These include several of LouisXVI senior officials who were fleeing France after the revolution. The Serpollet brothers and their father who invented a prototype of the motorcar which was steam powered resided at the Château Montvéran. Other famous visitors include Henriette d'Angeville one of the first women to climb Mont Blanc and the famous Russian classical pianist Serge Prokofiev. Guided visits of the château are available (in French only) strictly by reservation and take about 1 hour to complete.
